Replace the portnumber with the actual port number that you want to check and hit enter. If the port is being used by any application, then that application’s detail will be shown. The number, which is shown at the last column of the list, is the PID (process ID) of that application. So on the 'good' machine, port 80 is listed, on the 'bad' machine it isn't. On both machines I have apache listening to.:80 etc, properly set up vhosts, an appropriate entry in the hosts file etc. Both Macs are running El Capitan, are on the same network etc. And while on the good mac, test.dev is served, on the bad mac, I get this. Port forwarding or port mapping involves translating the address (or port number to a new destination), accepting the packets and forwarding it (using routing table). It's typically used in connecting remote computers to specific programs running on computer (in a private LAN (Local Area Network)).

I'm trying to get a pretty fresh install of OSX server running, but apache won't start. It has an error in the logs:

make_sock: could not bind to port 80
-----
and it looks like SOMETHING is running on port 80, but there is no process name:
-----
web: root# sudo netstat -an | grep LIST | grep 80
tcp4 0 0 *.80 . LISTEN
-----
There are not other apache processes running:
-----
web: root# ps -aux | grep httpd
root 19958 0.0 -0.0 27368 448 p4 S+ 3:49PM 0:00.00 grep httpd
web: root# killall httpd
No matching processes were found
-----
And yet i still get errors when trying to start it up:
-----
Processing config directory: /private/etc/httpd/users/*.conf
[Thu May 17 15:50:56 2007] [crit] (48)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to port 80

because something is actually running on port 80:
-----
web: root# telnet localhost 80
Trying 127.0.0.1.
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'.

When i treat it like apache/try to get the version number, it dies:

HEAD / HTTP 1.0
Connection closed by foreign host.
-----
so i don't think it is apache. but i have no idea what else it may be. How can i ID that service?
Any thoughts about what is going on? All ideas appreciated!

Intention of the article:
In this article we will try to understand some well know ports through Wireshark analysis.
What are the important ports?
There are many types of port. Here is the summary:
- Ports 0 to 1023 are Well-Known Ports.
- Ports 1024 to 49151 are Registered Ports.
- Ports 49152 to 65535 are Public Ports.
Analysis in Wireshark:
Before we use filter in Wireshark we should know what port is used for which protocol. Here are some examples:

TCP/UDP [Telnet] | 23 |

1. Port 80: Port 80 is used by HTTP. Let’s see one HTTP packet capture.
Here 192.168.1.6 is trying to access web server where HTTP server is running. So destination port should be port 80. Now we put “tcp.port 80” as Wireshark filter and see only packets where port is 80.

2. Port 53: Port 53 is used by DNS. Let’s see one DNS packet capture.
Here 192.168.1.6 is trying to send DNS query. So destination port should be port 53. Now we put “udp.port 53” as Wireshark filter and see only packets where port is 53.
3. Port 443: Port 443 is used by HTTPS. Not all sonos show up on my spotify for mac. Let’s see one HTTPS packet capture.

Now we put “tcp.port 443” as Wireshark filter and see only HTTPS packets. Little snitch installer is damaged.

4. Public/Registered port:
When we run only UDP through Iperf we can see both source and destination ports are used from registered/public ports. Worship app for mac windows 10.
